Eldest son of Mogami Yoshimori, lord of Yamagata Castle. He prevailed over his father to take the headship and, by stratagem and force, brought the Tendō, Shiratori, Sagae and other Dewa houses under his rule until most of the province was in his hands. Date Masamune's mother Yoshihime was his sister. He submitted to Hideyoshi, but the execution of his beloved daughter Komahime in the Hidetsugu affair left him with a grudge against the Toyotomi. At Sekigahara he joined the Eastern Army, held Naoe Kanetsugu's 20,000 Uesugi at Hasedō Castle, and led the pursuit of the retreating Uesugi in person, fighting on with a bullet lodged in his helmet. After the war he was granted Shōnai and ruled 570,000 koku. He was also an able lord who developed the Yamagata castle town and its waterworks.
