A native of Nanyang. He served Liu Biao and held Changsha; after Liu Biao's death he belonged to Cao Cao, but followed Liu Bei when he took Changsha after Red Cliffs. In the conquest of Yi Province he always led the vanguard, and his valour was praised as first in the three armies. At the battle of Mount Dingjun in the 24th year of Jian'an, in the struggle for Hanzhong, he thundered down the mountain with drums beating at Fa Zheng's signal and cut down the Wei commander Xiahou Yuan at a stroke as he repaired the palisades. For this he was made General Who Conquers the West, and when Liu Bei became King of Hanzhong he was promoted to General of the Rear, on a level with Guan Yu; it was then that Guan Yu complained at being ranked with "an old soldier." He died of illness the following year. In the Romance he is an archer who never misses.
