A commander must also know how to be afraid.

Cao Cao's caution to Xiahou Yuan, Records of the Three Kingdoms, Biography of Xiahou Yuan

A younger kinsman of Xiahou Dun and a clansman of Cao Cao. When the young Cao Cao was charged with a crime, Yuan took his place in prison and was later rescued by Cao Cao. From Guandu onward he campaigned everywhere and made his name keeping the army supplied. In Guanzhong he beat Ma Chao and Han Sui, pacified Longyou and became General Who Conquers the West. His generalship was celebrated as "five hundred li in three days, a thousand in six," though Cao Cao is said to have cautioned his impetuous kinsman that "a commander must also know how to be afraid." In the 24th year of Jian'an he held Hanzhong against Liu Bei for a year, but at Mount Dingjun, going out himself to repair the burnt palisades, he was cut down by Huang Zhong. Cao Cao lamented that "Yuan was never really a man who could command an army."
