Eldest of the four Shimazu brothers and, as clan head, the lord of Kyushu who marshalled his brothers' prowess. He drowned the great Ōtomo army in the feigned-retreat ambush at Mimigawa, beat the Ryūzōji at Okitanawate and came within reach of unifying Kyushu. Unable to withstand Hideyoshi's Kyushu campaign, he surrendered and was confirmed in Satsuma, and thereafter protected the Shimazu house to the end.
