At Sekigahara he led the Western Army's largest contingent, 17,000 men, in a day-long struggle with Fukushima Masanori. Defeated, he fled to Satsuma and was later exiled to Hachijō-jima, where he lived to 84 as the last living witness of Sekigahara.
