Son of Tomo, Toyotomi Hideyoshi's elder sister. As a boy he was adopted first by Miyabe Keijun and then by Miyoshi Yasunaga, taking the name Miyoshi Nobuyoshi. At the battle of Komaki and Nagakute in Tenshō 12 he was nominal commander of the detached force of Ikeda Tsuneoki and others sent to strike into Mikawa, but at Hakusan Forest the Tokugawa fell on his rear and routed him, earning him a fierce rebuke from Hideyoshi. The next year he invaded Awa with his uncle Hidenaga in the invasion of Shikoku, and was granted 430,000 koku at Hachiman in Ōmi, where he founded the castle town. In the Odawara campaign of Tenshō 18 he took Yamanaka Castle, the key Hōjō stronghold, in only half a day, and after the war was given Kiyosu in Owari. When Hideyoshi's heir Tsurumatsu died he was adopted as Hideyoshi's son, and in Tenshō 19 succeeded him as Imperial Regent. But after Hideyori was born a rift opened between them; in Bunroku 4 he was accused of treason, banished to Mount Kōya and made to take his own life, and more than thirty of his wives and children were executed at Sanjō-gawara (the Hidetsugu Incident). His reputation as the "Murderous Regent" is now widely regarded as a later invention.
