The Battle of Komaki and Nagakute was fought in 1584 (9th day of the 4th month, Tenshō 12) at Nagakute, Owari Province. Ieyasu pursues Hideyoshi's detached force through the night as it heads for Mikawa, and destroys it at Nagakute. The only battle in which Ieyasu ever took on Hideyoshi.

Tenshō 12. Tiring of the long stand-off at Komaki, Hideyoshi tries a daring stratagem. Ikeda Tsuneoki, Mori Nagayoshi, Hori Hidemasa and his nephew Hidetsugu: a detached force of 20,000 is sent secretly to strike Ieyasu's home province of Mikawa. A risky move known as the "deep raid."

ChaseIeyasu Rides Through the Night
Ieyasu does not miss the move. He gathers his troops at Obata Castle and follows the detached force under cover of darkness. The 20,000 are strung out in a long column, and the Tokugawa blade is creeping up on its tail.

HakusanThe Hidetsugu Contingent Routed
Dawn, Hakusan Forest. Hidetsugu's contingent at the rear of the column is surprised from behind by the Tokugawa. Caught asleep, the Hashiba troops break completely. The commander's nephew escapes only by borrowing a horse, and the rearguard of the detached force collapses in an instant.

HinokiganeHori Hidemasa Turns Back
But the Hashiba side had a master too. Receiving the news, Hori Hidemasa turns back to Hinokigane and coolly meets the Tokugawa vanguard as it charges on in triumph. The pursuers, who had pushed too far, receive a painful counterblow, and the battle swings back and forth.

NagakuteThe Decisive Battle at Nagakute
The main body under Ikeda and Mori, which had been attacking Iwasaki Castle, at last notices something is wrong and turns back. On the field of Hotokegane it collides head-on with Ieyasu's main force. After a fierce fight, Mori Nagayoshi, "the Demon of Musashi," is shot through the forehead, and Ikeda Tsuneoki is also killed.

On the battlefield Ieyasu won completely. But Hideyoshi still had 100,000 men and kept pressing with his main army. In time Oda Nobukatsu made a separate peace, and Ieyasu, his cause gone, sheathed his sword. A battle won, and a bid for the realm lost.
