Born the fourth son of Maeda Toshiie, he was adopted as heir by his elder brother Toshinaga and succeeded to the Kaga domain. He married Tamahime, daughter of the shogun Hidetada, binding the house to the Tokugawa. At twenty-one, in the winter siege of Osaka, he was posted opposite the Sanada-maru; his vanguard took Sanada Nobushige's bait, reached the palisade and was met by volleys that cost several hundred casualties. In the summer campaign the following year he avenged the defeat with distinguished service. As a ruler he is remembered for the tale of growing his nose hair to feign dullness and disarm the shogunate's suspicion, and for agrarian reforms and cultural patronage that consolidated the million-koku domain.
