Said to have been born a Fukushima, he was chosen by Hōjō Ujitsuna for his valour, married his daughter and took the Hōjō name. Because he used a banner with "Hachiman" written on a yellow ground he was called "Jiki Hachiman," and his fame resounded among friend and foe. As lord of Tamanawa Castle he held eastern Sagami and always led the vanguard of the Hōjō in battle. In the night battle of Kawagoe he held Kawagoe Castle, surrounded by an allied army of 80,000, with a mere 3,000 men and endured a siege of half a year. In concert with Ujiyasu's night attack he opened the gates, sallied out shouting "Victory, victory!" and caught the allies between two fires, destroying them. He fought hard again at the second battle of Kōnodai and against Uesugi Kenshin's invasions, living his whole life as a warrior.
